J2ME Workshop on 29th June

Hey,

Time to roll again. The J2ME Workshop went well with around 45+ students attending the presentation. Firstly I talked about Java ME Basics along with demonstration of various mobile games developed at Sun Club. Then we learn How to write a MIDlet from scratch - we traced each and every statement of the Hello World code by Carol Hamer. Some students were not so familiar with JAVA, so I explained them basic concepts of abstract classes, interfaces, multithreading etc. I hope I have explained them well how to understand the MIDP API documentation. Finally I iterated over the code of TumbleWeed Game by carol Hamer to explain advanced concepts of Sprite and LayerManager.

Experiences at SSCET College, Bhilai

Hello friends,

I just felt like sharing my experiences at SSCET college, Bhilai. I went there to deliver a presentation on "J2ME Game Programming".

Firstly I wish to thanks Chetna madam at SSCET who provided me with everthing i required for the presentation. The arrangements were excellent - Laptop, Speakers, Mic, Board everything - really a very nice seminar room.

I also wish to acknowledge Ms Nimisha Swami (for a very sweet introduction) and Ms Jayashree Nagpal for the invitation and concluding remarks.

Outline of the presentation: I started with introduction to JAVA followed by J2ME - MIDP/CLDC/JAR/JAD terms etc. But tried to keep the lecture more focussed on J2ME programming aspects. For this presentation I took my mobile game "PacMan" which has won 3rd prize in the "Let's Game Mobile" Contest @ Techkriti Oh Seven. I tried explaining the various concepts involved while writing mobile applications using J2ME.

The response from audience was also extremely good. There were around 150+ students from various departments - IT, CSE, Mechanical, MCA etc - really a very fabulous mixture of varying talents. Most of the students were comfortable with JAVA with a strong grasp in theoritical details too. I really enjoyed the various questions raised during the presentation.

I hope that these students will actively participate in our club activities.

bugs n t-shirts

This month of feb. has till now proved to be a month of mainly solaris activities. An open soalris bug fixing contest is almost ready and will be launched ass oonas techkriti gets over.. We have searched through the bug databse of opensolaris.org to find some suitable bugs which can be easily fixed by student without much previous knowledge of operating systems..

The next contest in the pipeline is the Tshirt dsign contest which we plan to float in order to have club logo and a club Tshirt. this way our's will be the first club in iitk to have its own tshirt. this should also proove to be a good way to involve people with the open solaris wave.

Using the enignma cards we have gained acces to swan network. The various courses and the ebooks acessibel are a nice feature of the swan network. Very soon we will activate our SAI account and provide junta links to practise exams. then mayb we can have a certification fest in iitk.

Btw we have been awarded as the best ambassadors in india for the month of Jan cudos to us!!!!

Let's summarize our work in Jan 2007

Hello friends,

I just felt like summarizing Sun Club's work in Jan 2007.

1. Publcizing the various details we continuously get from Sun Microsystems Inc.
2. Practicing the sessions done at Sun Microsystems Inc (Bangalore) during our 2 days trip.
3. J2ME Game Programming: Session 1 - Overview of J2ME, Basics, RoadRun Game by Martin J Wells. The idea of using NetBeans and Sun Wireless Toolkit for the presentation was nice. Further the attendance was more than 100 !! Hurray !!
4. J2ME Game Programming: Session 2 - TumbleWeed Game by Carol Hamer
5. Talk with Prof Gupta over Sun Rays. We have to meet him again in February.
6. Meeting with students who did winter projects with Sun Club. I believe that some projects are really nice. Let's share them with Ganesh soon.
7. The Graph Renderer software has been significantly developed. I am planning to submit it at PPPJ 2007.
8. Communicated with many first year students to develop interest in JAVA. I hope Prof Sinha should be really happy with our initiative for first yearites.

I think we should take "OpenSolaris" as the theme for Februrary month. Ganesh was also suggesting the same. Lets make this Sun Club a big success.
